Solar Greenhouse – Taoyuan Vanilla Cultivation
Challenge
Vanilla cultivation in Taiwan is difficult due to the hot and humid subtropical climate, which contrasts with the plant’s natural environment of cooler and drier rainforest understories.
In addition, solar energy developers were interested in growing vanilla under solar panel installations, requiring a system that could balance:
- Light uniformity
- Temperature control
- Humidity
- Ventilation
Solution
After discussions with growers, diffusion panels were recommended because vanilla grows best in environments with 50–70% shading.
Light Diffusion PC Corrugated Sheets help by:
- Distributing sunlight evenly
- Preventing leaf burn caused by direct sunlight
- Blocking harmful UVA radiation (320–400 nm)
- Converting certain wavelengths (270–380 nm) into beneficial infrared light (620–670 nm) that supports plant growth.
Comparison of greenhouse cultivation using traditional shade netting (left) versus diffusion panels (right).
Results
Farmers observed:
- Faster plant growth cycles
- Earlier harvests
- Increased number of harvests per season
- A cultivation environment suitable for vanilla production in Taiwan
